HOBOKEN, NJ – After three games the Whitman College women's soccer team is still searching for its first win of the season. Saturday afternoon the Missionaries fell 2-0 to New York University in the Stevens Engineering Tournament. Whitman gave up two first half goals and was unable to gain any ground in the second half.
Â
The Missionaries had an early opportunity when
Kelsey Peck had a shot before the five minute mark, but unfortunately missed high. Not even a full minute later, Whitman lined up for their second corner kick of the opening period, but
Linnea Soo could not connect with any of her teammates, keeping the score tied 0-0 early.
Â
Whitman goalie,
Cassidy Brewin, saved a header by NYU's Mckennah Spagnola in the 13th minute, but six minutes later, NYU tallied the game's first goal with Melissa Menta's shot off the crossbar. The Missionaries came right back, but
Brianna Brown missed the equalizer wide in the 22nd minute, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the Violets.
Â
NYU's Menta struck again in the 25th minute, putting the Violets up 2-0 after her break away score. Whitman struggled controlling the ball much of the first half and fortunately, for the Whitties, Menta missed high just two minutes later. NYU's final shot of the half came in the 41st minute, a shot that missed high and left the Missionaries facing a two-goal deficit at the break.
Â
The second half was a showcase of defense from both sides as NYU was only able to get three shots off, while Whitman tallied just one. The Missionaries' defense played phenomenal for most the game as
Cassidy Brewin saw just four shots on goal and collecting two saves in the contest.
Â
Whitman will look to bounce back before tomorrow's game, as they face Vassar College at 9:15 a.m. PST in search for their first win of the season.Â
