LEWISTON, Idaho – A scrappy second game wasn't enough to propel Whitman College's volleyball team to victory Saturday afternoon as host Lewis-Clark State College downed the Missionaries, 3-0, in a non-conference contest at the LCSC Activity Center.
Megan Henry and
Abby Seethoff combined to lead Whitman's attack with 16 kills in the loss.
The loss, in its final non-league contest of the season, bumps Whitman's record to 2-4 while Lewis-Clark improves to 3-2.
The Warriors broke out sharply in the opener, racing out to a 25-11 win to gain the early advantage, then did the same in the second game with an early 9-4 lead over Whitman.
The Missionaries weren't going to go quietly, however, battling back to tie the game at 11-11 before inching in front at 13-12.
Neither team could break free from the other until LCSC won consecutive points following a 17-17 tie. It would go on to steal game two by a 25-20 count, then closed the gate on Whitman with a 25-16 win in game three.
Along with Henry's nine kills and Seethoff's seven,
Shae Kanakaole contributed four more to the attack which was set up by
Anna Dawson who collected 13 assists.
Defensive specialist
Hannah Linsenmayer came away with a team-leading nine digs, getting help from Seethoff who added eight more.
The Missionaries take to the road for their next matches, opening the Northwest Conference slate Friday evening at the University of Puget Sound with a contest at Pacific Lutheran University to follow on Saturday.
