PORTLAND, Ore. Â Whitman College didn't just sweep host Lewis & Clark College, 3-0, Saturday night in Northwest Conference volleyball action in the Pamplin Sports Center. No, Whitman was dominant as it never trailed in the match and only had to break free from four tie scores during a win that, coupled with a Pacific Luthern University loss earlier, lifts Whitman into a third-place tie with PLU in the league standings.
The victory evens Whitman's overall mark at 8-8 and improves its conference record to 5-3. The Pioneers drop to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the league with their home loss.
The latest the Pios would pull even with Whitman in any of the games was at 6-6 in the first game. Whitman scored first followed by an L&C point in the second game but that would be the final time the home team would be even with Whitman the rest of the night.
Whitman needed just 88 attacks to achieve the same 31 kills the Pios would register -- from 107 attacks.
Other than team blocks, a wash at 5.0 for each team, Whitman claimed ownership of nearly every statistical category during its dominant display. Unfortunately one of the categories the Pios 'won' on the night was reception errors with a total of 10 in the match compared to only three from Whitman.
Leading the way at the net for Whitman was
Katie Sisson who put together one of her best outings as a collegian. The sophomore has posted a couple of matches with higher kill totals than Saturday's 10, but never before has she completed a match without a single attacking error. For good measure, Sisson put the cherry on top of her sundae with a resounding kill to end Saturday's match.
Dealing out the assists for Sisson's and her teammates' kills was
Anna Dawson who accumulated 25 assists to go along with 10 digs.
Shae Kanakaole added 10 more digs to Whitman's total, as well as seven more kills and a pair of service aces.
Whitman stays on the road for its next two outings, conference matches at Pacific (Ore.) University on Friday and at George Fox University on Saturday. Pacific sits one game behind Whitman in the league standings with a 4-4 NWC mark, while Fox is 1-7 within the league this season.
