PORTLAND, Ore. Playing in its third consecutive road game didn't seem to phase Whitman College Tuesday evening as the 25th-ranked Blues roared past host Multnomah University, 73-52, for a non-conference victory over the NAIA school at Jim Skagen Court.
Whitman (4-0) trailed the Lions (1-5) only once in the contest, at 5-4, then reeled off a 10-0 run in taking command through the middle of the first quarter.
That nine-point advantage grew over the next minutes only to dwindle toward the end of the quarter with Multnomah closing to within three, 22-19, at the end of the quarter.
A layup from Milan Woods drew the Lions to within a point at the start of the second quarter but that might have been the highlight for the hometown as the Blues put their foot down and out scored Multnomah by a count of 19-4 over the rest of the 10-minute session to take a 41-25 advantage into the halftime break.
Though the Lions would step up over the third and fourth quarters the Blues always seemed to have an answer and still outscored the home team in each of the final two quarters, building the halftime edge to a final 21-point margin.
Whitman did quite a bit of damage in close to the basket, not only accumulating 50 points in the paint but also registering a 43-28 advantage on the glass.
Chelsi Brewer's 21 points for Whitman led all players, but she got help from
Emily Rommel and
Maegen Martin who each chimed in with 11 apiece.
Rommel did more than just hit for double-figures as the junior forward ripped down a game-high eight rebounds, blocked five shots, came away with two steals and added a pair of assists in a numbers-filled statistics line within the box score.
Ten players scored at least a point during the win, and 12 came down with at least one rebound.
Multnomah was led by Bethany George with 11 points and Woods who finished with 10.
Next up for the nationally-ranked Blues is another non-conference contest as Whitman takes on host Warner Pacific College Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in Portland.
