McMINNVILLE, Ore. Â Senior goalkeeper
Haley Case came up with six saves Saturday afternoon but her Whitman Blues weren't able to conquer host Linfield College, dropping a 1-0 overtime decision in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at Maxwell Field.
Case came up with three saves in each half for the Blues (3-14-2, 3-10-2 NWC) in spearheading a defense -- which included players such as starters
Elyse Laurin,
Kenz Tierney,
Olivia Thomson and
Saba Zewdie -- that limited the Wildcats (7-9-3, 7-5-3) to 12 shots during a scoreless regulation time.
The eventual game-winner for Linfield came early in the fifth minute of overtime as Taylor Cole poked in a shot behind Case off a cross from the Wildcats' Lexi Kerr.
Though the Blues' defense was able to fend off the Linfield attack, Whitman's own offense couldn't get on track, generating just two shots in the contest. Both of those came off the foot of
Alissa Soo, the first of which was blocked by a defender and the second sailed wide of the frame.
Whitman finishes its season Sunday afternoon at Pacific (Ore.) University in the finale for both teams. Three weeks ago Whitman defeated the visiting Boxers by a 4-2 count, scoring all four of its goals in the first half of that game.
