HONOLULU Â It didn't take long -- 11 seconds -- for No. 24 Whitman to take control of Monday's non-conference women's basketball game against Occidental (Calif.) College at the Hoops in Hawaii Holiday Classic. After gaining the opening tip The Blues'
Casey Poe knocked down a 3-pointer and the rest was history in Whitman's 67-49 victory in the Moanalua HS Gym.
The victory extends Whitman's season-opening win streak into double-digits, 10-0, while the loss evened the Tigers' mark to 4-4.
The Blues have raced out to quick starts in several of their recent wins and Monday's efforts continued that trend as they pushed the lead into double-figures not even five minutes into the game with the second of
Chelsi Brewer's four 3-pointers.
Only once after that, at 16-7, did the lead dip to less than 10, and
Mady Burdett fixed that issue by dropping in a long-range bomb to extend the lead to 12.
Its 15-point advantage, 24-9, at the end of the first quarter hardly wavered over the remainder of the contest. The halftime lead, 39-24, was the same; at the end of three quarters it was only trimmed to 12 (51-39); and that slight dip was rectified in the fourth quarter when The Blues allowed Oxy to score only 10 points while pushing the final advantage to 18.
Poe finished the win notching her second double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and coming away with a game-high 11 rebounds. She also registered game-bests in assists (5) and blocks (4).
Brewer's four treys pushed the senior to a 16-point night in leading all scorers, while Burdett chimed in with 10 and
Alysse Ketner added 14, along with seven boards.
Occidental was led by Triana Anderson's 14 points and Tala Ismail's nine rebounds.
Their stay in Honolulu continues Tuesday with a non-conference outing against University of Redlands at 7 p.m. PT.
