OLYMPIA -
Joseph Zimmer belted a three-run home run the fifth inning and
Lucas Thrun went 2-for-2 and scored three times as Whitman notched a 14-1 victory over Saint Martin's in the second game of a collegiate baseball doubleheader Saturday night at the rainy and windy Regional Athletic Complex.
The Saints, members of the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference, won the opener 12-7.
Saturday's nightcap triumph was the first posted by the Missionaries in six tries this season.
Whitman scored twice without the benefit of a hit in the second inning of game two. The Missionary rally was aided by aÂ
Saint. Martin's error.
Five fifth-inning runs helped the visitors break the game open. The first run crossed on an error, Thrun brought in the second tally with a double down the left-field line, and Zimmer made it 7-0 with his long fly -- a blast to left.
Saint Martin's picked up its only run in the last of the fifth.
Thrun and Zimmer commenced a seven-run scoring spree in the sixth with bases-loaded walks.
Milo Mincin increased Whitman's lead to 12-1 with a three-run double to right.
Patrick Stanton brought in Whitman's sixth run of the inning and 13th of the night with an infield single.
The Missionaries final run scored on the last of four snafus committed by the Saints.
Pitchers
Garrett Atkinson and
Nick Johnson combined on a six-hitter over the seven-inning contest. Atkinson allowed just one hit, walked two, and struck out six over four frames while Johnson punched out three
Saint Martin's batters in as many innings.
Whitman started game one in promising fashion.
Adrian Vela ripped a first-inning home run with a man on to give the Missionaries a 2-0 lead.
Saint Martin's responded with a run in the home first before Whitman picked up two more runs in the second - one on an
Anthony Lim single and the second on a 6-4 fielder's choice by
Alex Behrman.
The Saints closed the gap to 4-3 in the last of the second.
Jasper Crusberg lifted a sacrifice fly to center in the third inning to help the Missionaries reclaim a multiple-run edge, 5-3.
Saint Martin's took control of the game with five runs in the fifth inning.
Paul Heywood got a run back for Whitman in the sixth with a sac fly to left that made it a two-run game, 8-6.
But the Saints scored a pair of runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Braden Hussey collected Whitman's final RBI with a 5-4 fielder's choice in the ninth inning.
Thrun, Crusberg, and Lim had two hits apiece in the first game for the Missionaries.
Whitman travels to Portland Sunday for an 11 a.m. twin bill against Lewis & Clark.
