Southern swing ends in loss to Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Whitman College's three-game trip South into California closed Monday night with a 17-2 loss to to host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in non-conference women's lacrosse action at the Athenas' Zinda Field. Lindsay Schwartz scored a goal in each half for the Missionaries.

Whitman slips to 1-5 with Monday's results while C-M-S improves to 5-2.

The Athenas broke in front nearing the 20-minute mark of the first half scoring three goals in a span of 3 minutes and 16 seconds, but Schwartz converted a man-up free-position opportunity for the Whitties four minutes later to cut the deficit to two.

That marker would prove to be the lone goal of the opening 30 minutes for Whitman which entered the halftime break trailing 8-1.

A swarming C-M-S attack would limit Whitman's scoring chances until Schwartz added her second of the game, another unassisted goal this one coming with 5:32 to play.

Again, like with Saturday's loss at Pomona-Pitzer College, the Missionaries on Monday would win the battle in the circle claiming a 10-9 draw control advantage over the Athenas, but C-M-S caused 17 turnovers and came up with 47 ground balls to gain the edge in possession time and, eventually, shots.

Schwartz would lead the Missionaries in draw controls with six, and tied with Nina Henelsmith for a team-best three ground balls apiece.

Whitman returns home from its trip to Cali only to head back out on the road for three more non-conference contests. Sunday the Whitties will square off against College of Wooster (Ohio) in a neutral-site game in Newberg, Oregon, where they will then fly to Colorado Springs afterward. In the Springs they'll first play Wellesley (Mass.) College on March 22 followed by a game the next day against host Colorado College.
