After finishing up a protested game from day one the Missionaries took on Bethany Lutheran University in a double-header. Game one finished with a score that may have caused some to double-take, as Whitman prevailed, 20-18 in a seven inning slugfest. The Whits continued their hot hitting in game two, running away with a 14-4 ballgame.
Adrian Vela fell a homerun shy of batting for the cycle in the day's opening game, but drove in four runs for the Whits (6-13).
Joseph Zimmer added two hits and four runs, while
Jake Wishart, Vela and
Paul Heywood all scored three times. Heywood went 2-for-4 from the plate and first year
Lucas Thrun was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Alex Behrman also got into the mix of things at the plate where he contributed two hits and three runs in the early session.
It would have been easy for the Missionaries to concede to the Vikings (0-2) after facing a 7-0 deficit heading in the third inning, but Whitman fought back and the bats came alive in the bottom half of the third. An error-filled Vikings inning gave the Whits life. Behrman reached base and Zimmer walked, after which a wild pitch and an error by the catcher allowed Behrman to cross home.
At the end of the half inning, Whitman found itself with a 9-7 advantage, but the game had plenty of drama left. The fourth inning saw similar excitement, but favored Bethany Lutheran. The Vikings accrued five runs in the inning and regained their lead, 12-9. After adding another run in the fifth, the Missionaries faced another large deficit of four runs.
Behrman started the team off with a double down the left field line and Zimmer followed with a single. Wishart added a single of his own, scoring Behrman; and Vela's double cleared the bases. What finished as a five hit, five run inning put the Whits back on top and in good position to close out the game. Unfortunately, the Vikings had other things in mind.
Bethany Lutheran again answered with five runs in the top of the sixth, putting Whitman back into a four-run hole. However, the Missionaries would climb out. Vela drove in two runs on a triple and then scored on Heywood's double. Thrun brought Heywood across the plate to give the Whits the lead, but before the inning finished Thrun too crossed home plate.
Entering the seventh and final inning, Whitman's two-run lead was anything but safe.
John Lyon pitched a solid seventh, closing out the game for the Missionaries who walked away with a 20-18 win.
The second game of the afternoon showed similar results for Whitman who used an early 8-0 lead to run away from Bethany Lutheran. After the Vikings began to claw back into the game, cutting the Whitman lead to 9-4, the Missionaries caught fire. The top of the sixth yielded five runs for the Whits and took the wind out of the Vikings sails.
Zimmer finished the game a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
Braden Hussey contributed four hits, one RBI and two runs as
Nick Johnson pitched seven solid innings, surrendering four runs on six hits.
Whitman will finish up the Tucson Invitational tomorrow afternoon Aurora University in a game that is scheduled for 9 a.m. PST.
