PORTLAND, Ore. – It was pitching that led the way for Whitman College on Saturday afternoon againt the Lewis and Clark College Pioneers.
Nick Johnson and
Henry Lin both pitched complete games and both allowed just one run in their respective starts. The Missionaries took game one of the series 7-1 and dominated throughout in game two, collecting a 13-1 victory.
Â
In game one of the afternoon Whitman jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning when opportunity presented itself.
Jake Wishart reached on a two-out error and stole second and third, before
Adrian Vela doubled to left center field, driving in Wishart and
Joseph Zimmer.
Paul Heywood followed Vela with a double of his own which scored Vela and put the Whits in a comfortable three-run lead.
Â
Zimmer's fifth inning double led to another Missionary run. The seventh and eighth innings were big for Whitman as the team tacked on three runs, extending their lead to 7-1; where it would stand to the end. Heywood drove in his third RBI of the day with a groundout to the shortstop that scored Wishart. In the eighth the Whits again took advantage of two Pio errors as both
Jasper Crusberg and
Anthony Lim scored in the inning.
Â
Nick Johnson pitched an outstanding game, allowing just one run and four hits. Johnson also collected a complete game, striking out five and walking just one. Johnson has been arguably Whitman's biggest weapon on the mound this season where he is 6-2 on the year with a team leading 3.83 ERA.
Â
In game two head coach
Brian Kitamura called on sophomore,
Henry Lin to lead the defense from the mound. Lin collected his third win of the season, giving up just one run and four hits. Lin, like Johnson, threw a complete nine inning game and kept Lewis and Clark in check for the day.
Â
As much as the Missionary bats were active in the day's first game, they were even more so in game two, where the Whits accumulated 21 hits. Wishart, Vela, and
Lucas Thrun combined to go 10-for-13 at the plate with six runs and six RBIs.
Â
After scoring a run in the top of the first, Whitman never looked back. The biggest inning was the eight-run eighth that the visiting Whits put together. Heywood and Thrun both singled to start the inning,
Patrick Stanton scored Heywood, Wishart singled and Zimmer homered to left field. Before the inning concluded, the Missionaries had racked up nine hits and eight runs. Heywood, Thrun, and
Tyler Lewis all batted twice in the inning.
Â
In perhaps the best all-around game they have played this season, the Whits came away with a 13-1 win and a chance to sweep the series tomorrow afternoon. Game three is set for a 12 p.m. start time at Lewis and Clark.Â
