Whits set scoring record in win over Linfield

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The ever-brightening sky Saturday afternoon shone brighter and brighter on Whitman College's women's lacrosse team as the Whitties established a team scoring record with their 20-5 Northwest Conference victory over visiting Linfield College. Nina Henelsmith, Sam Sheffer and Lindsay Schwartz scored four goals each in the victory over the Wildcats at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

The win moves Whitman's overall record to 4-9 while lifting their conference mark to 4-3. Linfield closed it's season with Saturday's loss, ending the year with records of 0-14 and 0-7, respectively.

It didn't take Whitman very long to begin lighting up the scoreboard after Sheffer's opening draw control win. A quick flick down field to Maddie Florer resulted in a goal just nine seconds into the contest and the race was on. Give Linfield credit, however, as it pulled even one minute later on a free-position shot from leading scorer Mae Seifert.

The next goal, from Whitman leading scorer Lindsay Schwartz, initiated the beginning of the end for the Wildcats, though. Schwartz netted her 48th of the season not even two minutes after Seifert's tying tally, and the Whitties added three more unanswered goals -- Anna Melville goals sandwiched around a Sheffer marker -- to push their lead to 5-1.

Over the remainder of the game each time Linfield would find the back of the goal once Whitman would answer with consecutive scores including a seven-goal outburst that spanned the end of the opening half and start of the second half.

Florer finished with a career-high three goals in the win to help on the attack, and both Hannah Bashevkin and Dana Casterella notched their first goals of the year, Bashevkin adding a second one for good measure.

Savannah McNichol started in goal for Whitman and earned the win, eventually surrendering the net at the start of the second half to teammate Kate Whittingham who finished with three saves.

Whitman's season concludes Sunday at home against conference leader Pacific (Ore.) University. Shortly before the noon-time start Whitman will recognize its four graduating seniors -- Emily Jordan, Henelsmith, McNichol and Sheffer -- in a brief ceremony.
