McMINNVILLE, Ore. –
Lindsay Schwartz pocketed eight goals,
Nina Henelsmith added three, and
Savannah McNichol came up with four saves to spirit Whitman College past host Linfield College, 16-5, in Northwest Conference women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon.
The Missionaries (2-8, 2-2 NWC) dominated the Wildcats (0-10, 0-4) from the start, notching the game's first four goals beginning with a Henelsmith marker off an assist from Schwartz not even three minutes into the contest.
The pair switched roles for the next Whitman goal then Schwartz added an unassisted tally to push the count to 3-0. The opening rush was finished off by
Emily Jordan at the 12:44 mark with her fourth of the season.
A Mae Seifert goal for the hosts ended that string but Schwartz, with two, and Henelsmith found the back of the cage for three more goals to lift Whitman to a commanding 7-1 lead, an advantage that would become 8-2 at the halftime break.
Seifert broke the seal on second-half scoring but the next 20 minutes of action flowed downhill for Whitman as it reeled off eight unanswered goals to dampen any rallying hopes that Seifert's marker may have given the Wildcats.
The Whitties' prowess in the center circle nearly matched the numbers on the scoreboard as Whitman won the draw control battle, 15-4. Schwartz and Bea Sheffer came away with five each and Henelsmith chipped in with four.
McNichol started and played the opening half in goal for Whitman, coming up with four saves while allowing just two goals.
Kate Whittingham took over between the pipes in the second half and added a pair of saves.
Sunday's results give Schwartz a season total of 39 goals and 43 points, numbers that are tops in the conference. The first-year also leads the league in draw controls with 47. With three ground balls on the day Henelsmith now has 22 for the season, tied for fourth most in the conference.
League action continues for Whitman in its next games. Saturday's contest at George Fox University is followed by a game at University of Puget Sound. The season concludes at home the next weekend with Linfield and
Pacific (Ore.) University visiting the Whitman Athletics Fields on April 23 and 24, respectively.
