PARKLAND, Wash. – The Whitman College women's soccer team had its hands full Sunday afternoon as they took on the nation's 22nd-ranked team, Pacific Lutheran University. The Whits hung tough through a scoreless first half, but the Lutes used a two-goal second half to tally the 2-0 victory.
As many would expect, taking on any Top 25 team proves to be a difficult task. The Pacific Lutheran (5-0-1, 2-0 NWC) defense swarmed all afternoon, allowing just four Whitman shots and of those four just two came on goal.
Lena de Guzman and
Pagan Hetherington accounted for both shots, but the Lutes goalkeeper collected a save on each attempt.
A bright spot for Whitman (0-6, 0-2 NWC) came in goal where goalkeeper
Haley Case collected 10 saves during the afternoon contest. It was a busy day for Case, as the Lutes fired 19 shots, 12 coming on goal. The Whits entered the break tied 0-0 with Case accruing two saves and and de Guzman nearly scoring in the 21st minute.
After the half, Pacific Lutheran began to pull away. Hetherington's shot came in the 47th but she was unable to connect. The Lutes first goal came in the 64th minute and then again at the 84:04 mark.
Whitman returns home next weekend after a mid-week game in Spokane, Wash. against rival Whitworth University on Tuesday.
