Collin Faunt's early goal and goalkeeper
Owen Davis-Bower's first career shutout led visiting Whitman College past host Cal Lutheran University, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday night at the Kingsmen's Rolland Stadium.
The victory keeps Whitman (2-0) unbeaten while the loss is the first of the fall for CLU (1-1).
Action Saturday rolled out to a quick start as
Ben Freedman sent a soft pass across the face of the goal to Faunt who'd beaten his mark and one-timed the cross behind CLU goalie Sergio Esquivel just 2 minutes, 24 seconds into the game. The tap-in was the first shot of the game and would surprisingly hold up in a game that saw opportunities come in waves for both squads over the remainder of the contest.
Whitman won the battle on the scoreboard along with edging out the Kingsmen in shot totals, 13-12. Of the combined 25 shots in the match, 16 came in a lively second half during which each goalie came up big to keep the scoreboard from changing.
Davis-Bower (1-0), a first-year player making his second collegiate start, saw four CLU shots make it on frame in the final 45 minutes, stopping each on-goal attempt. At the other end of the pitch Esquivel came away with five second-half saves, allowing the Kingsmen to remain in striking distance. Each keeper finished the night with six saves for their teams.
Faunt's goal was only the second of the senior's career, and it was his first game-winning tally.
Whitman gets a day of rest Sunday before completing its opening-weekend swing in Southern California Monday at host Chapman University in another non-conference tilt.
