CLAREMONT, Calif. Â Whitman College senior goalkeeper
Haley Case set a personal record for saves with 11 in Sunday afternoon's 6-0 non-conference loss at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. She racked up eight in the opening 45 minutes to tie her previous single-game record.
The loss leaves Whitman (0-2) still searching for its first win while the Sagehens (2-0) remain unbeaten after each team's initial two games of the 2016 season.
Pomona broke in front just 68 seconds into the contest with a breakaway goal from Danika Bethune. But Case built a brick wall in the frame over the remainder of the half as she made stop after stop to maintain Whitman's one-goal deficit.
That wall began to crumble soon after the halftime break as Pomona doubled its lead just 2 minutes, 6 seconds into the second half. Though Case would come up with three more stops the Sagehens would be relentless on the attack and add four more goals to create the final six-goal winning margin.
Whitman wasn't able to generate much in its attacking third but did accumulate four shots on the afternoon, two from first-year
Pagan Hetherington.
Its home opener is next on Whitman's plate as it welcomes Northwest University to the Athletic Fields for a 5 p.m non-conference contest Friday, Sept. 9. College of Idaho visits Sunday at noon for the final non-conference match-up before the beginning of the Northwest Conference slate.
