Wire to wire for #2 Blues

SPOKANE, Wash. Second-ranked Whitman College went on the road Tuesday night for a dangerous top-10 match-up at No. 6 Whitworth University, and the Blues will return home with their unblemished record intact after posting a wire-to-wire, 91-75 victory over host and sixth-ranked Whitworth University.

Not only did the victory give the Blues (18-0, 9-0 NWC) a season sweep of the Pirates (15-3, 6-3), it marked the first time in history that Whitman led Whitworth wire-to-wire from the first point of the opening game of a season's two contests between the teams. And with the Whitman women's win earlier in the evening on the same Whitworth Fieldhouse court, the pair of Tuesday victories mark the first time both Whitman teams have swept the road game at Whitworth since the 2011-12 season.

Not good enough, yet? The Whitman men's victory deals Whitworth only its 14th loss at the Fieldhouse since 2005, and the Blues gave them two of the past three defeats.

Among the highlights of the night, and there seemed to be many, was Tim Howell's first basket -- in front of more than 1,300 fans most likely rooting against him and his teammates.

It seems the junior guard left himself three points shy of cracking the 1,000-point barrier after his 40-point effort Sunday in a win at George Fox University. Howell didn't wait long to gain that milestone Tuesday as he drained a 3-pointer from the left wing at the 17:39 mark of the first half to lift Whitman to an 8-0 lead.

The early points prior to Howell's unforgettable shot all came from Cedric Jacobs-Jones who drove through the paint for a layin to open the scoring then quickly converted a Whitworth turnover into a trey of his own for the five-point start.

It never got any better for the highly-ranked Pirates as an 8-4 deficit would be the closest they would come over the remainder of the game.

The Blues teetered over and under a double-digit lead for most of the rest of the opening half, but Joey Hewitt drained a trey with 1:31 left in the half to push Whitman to a double-digit advantage that would never lessen over the final 21 minutes and 31 seconds.

Whitworth didn't play a poor game, or have a horribly off night. It was just that every time it would get up off the mat with a basket of its own following a floater from Jase Harrison, a bucket or trey from Howell, or an offensive rebound and put-back from any of several different Blues crashing the glass, well, Whitman just answered with more.

Twice in a row, after the lead had hovered around the 13- or 14-point mark Whitman in the second half picked up three-points on layups-and-ones to increase the lead, stretching it to 18 at 46-28. It seemed as if the adage "anything you can do, I can do better" was in play for most of the game.

Howell's 29 points led all scorers, but he wasn't alone in helping the Blues post their dominant victory. Harrison added 15 points and was joined in double-figures by Austin Butler (13 points) and Hewitt (12).

The rebounding advantage for Whitman was only two, but nine different players came down with at least one. Harrison and Jack Stewart led all players around the rim with six boards apiece.

Whitworth shot 40 percent from the floor, compared to Whitman's 50 percent, and was led by Kyle Roach's 17 points.

The season continues Saturday for Whitman with a league contest against visiting Willamette University at 6 p.m. in the Sherwood Athletics Center.
