SALEM, Ore. Whitman goalkeeper
Allie Seracuse came up with a single-game career best 14 saves Sunday at Sparks Field, but host Willamette University was able to find a way to get past her twice in the first half before adding a penalty kick score in the final minute to record a 3-0 Northwest Conference women's soccer win over the visiting Blues.
The Bearcats (9-3-2, 6-3-1 NWC) racked up 37 shots in the contest, the most surrendered by Whitman (1-12-1, 1-8-1) this season.
Eliza Van Wetter provided Whitman with its first opportunity for a score.
Chelsea Day dropped a corner kick into the box just past the near post where
Saba Zewdie leaped high and deflected the ball farther across the goal face. Van Wetter was near the back post and one-timed a volley toward goal but Willamette keeper Kristen Barclay was in position for the save.
The Bearcats' Emmy Manset eventually broke the scoreless tie, driving a shot into the left side of the goal behind Seracuse early in the 10th minute. A second goal came in the 35th, and the PK goal with 32 seconds remaining ended the Willamette scoring.
Whitman had an opportunity to cut into its two-goal deficit in the 75th, but
Pagan Hetherington's 30-yard shot off a free kick was blocked as was the follow-up by
Quinne Woolley.
A weekend home stand is next on the schedule for the Blues who welcome Pacific (Ore.) University and George Fox University to the Whitman Athletic Fields on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
