VB keeps rolling

WALLA WALLA, Wash.  Whitman volleyball rolled to a 25-14, 29-27, 25-23 sweep of visiting George Fox University in Northwest Conference action Friday night in the Sherwood Athletics Center, winning their third straight and seventh out of their last nine matches.

The victory lifts Whitman (8-10, 8-5 NWC) past the Bruins (8-9, 7-6) into fourth place within the league standings, and credits the Blues with a season sweep of Fox (3-2 on Sept. 29).

Kalli Dickey posted a career-best 17 kills to lead Whitman's attack, which closed out the night with a .364 attacking percentage in the final set.

A 7-0 run when tied at 8-8 and a 6-0 streak when leading 14-10 propelled the Blues to their opening set victory, one in which they trailed only twice by one point each time.

The night turned during the next set, though.

Seventeen ties, eight lead changes, and five set points filled the lengthy second set.

Fox didn't earn its first lead of the set until at 10-9, but a Megan Henry kill erased that deficit.

From that point forward the teams traded points until Whitman built a three-point edge, 23-20, for the set's largest point differential.

The Blues surrendered the next three points, however, but managed to earn the first attempt at a set point with a Codie Conching kill.

Fox rebuffed the Blues' set point and went on to inch in front twice for two set points. A service error erased one of those opportunities, and an Anna Dawson kill negated the other, evening the score at 26-26.

It took two attempts at set point but Whitman finally closed out the set win on an attack error that sent the Blues into the intermission with a two-game lead.

Like with the previous set, the third began with Whitman taking the lead from the start, but also like the previous set, Fox would battle back and take a lead around the same point as in the second set.

Trailing 17-16 Whitman ran off four straight points -- a Conching kill, a Dickey kill, a Bruins attacking error, and a Conching service ace -- to finally find some breathing room, eventually finishing the set and match victory off with a Conching kill.

Dawson's 37 set assists mark the third straight match of at least 36 assists from the senior, while Conching's 10 kills -- her ninth consecutive match in double digits -- and 17 digs give the junior her seventh double-double of the season.

At the net defensively, Lara Temal came away with a solo block and three block assists, surpassing her average of 3.67 blocks per match over the past dozen outings.

Whitman closes out its home slate Saturday night with a Senior Night match at 5 p.m. against Lewis & Clark College. Dawson, Temel and Cherokee Washington will wave their goodbyes to the home crowd one last time before finishing their careers on the road with two final matches.
