TACOMA, Wash. Whitman's women's soccer team pounded out an advantage in shots on goal Sunday afternoon at the foggy East Athletic Field of host University of Puget Sound, but the home team walked away with the victory after scratching out a pair of goals in the Loggers' 2-0 Northwest Conference victory.
Puget Sound (12-3-3, 10-2-2 NWC) scored early with a Tess Peppis unassisted goal in the game's fourth minute, but much of the remainder of the first half belonged to the Whitman (2-15-1, 2-11-1) attack.
Sophie Brussell put two shots on frame as did
Emily Rigsby, with
Eliza Van Wetter,
Dani Espinoza and
Jessie Mano getting one crack each at finding the equalizer before the halftime break. Each time, though, Loggers goalkeeper Jamie Lange was there for the save to allow her team to take its narrow lead into the intermission.
Espinoza,
Olivia Thomson and
Marissa Meyer looked for the tying goal with shots on frame over the initial 23 minutes of second-half action, but a back-breaking goal for UPS in the 74th left the Blues in too deep of a hole from which to climb.
A foul by Whitman to the left of the box set up the Loggers with a set piece. The free kick opportunity was a set play passed into the corner for Emily Prasil, who worked around a defender before slotting a low cross toward the back post which Genevieve Cheatham was able to poke her boot at and deflect the cross inside the right post and behind Whitman goalie
Bryanna Schreiber.
The insurance goal allowed UPS to pack in its defense, which subsequently didn't allow Whitman another shot in the contest.
The Blues will conclude their season at home, beginning with Wednesday's 5 p.m. contest against visiting Whitworth University followed by a season-ending match Sunday against Linfield College.
