WALLA WALLA, Wash. Saturday's pair of victories over Lewis & Clark College at Harvey Pool provided Whitman's men's and women's swim teams with a weekend sweep of visiting Northwest Conference opponents.
The Blues defeated the Pioneers by scores of 135-70 in the women's dual meet, and by a 123-81 count in the men's meet against the Pios.
On Friday evening Whitman rolled to wins over Pacific (Ore.) University's men's and women's teams.
Mara Selznick -- one of four NCAA qualifiers for the program last winter -- continued her early season success in her 'off' events. The school record-holder in the backstrokes, Selznick raced to first-place finishes Saturday in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles, just as she had done Friday night. She did lead-off the winning 400 medley relay Saturday to keep in touch with her backstroke roots.
Also racking up points against L&C was first-year
Zoë Hill. She roared to a victory in the 50 free (24.85 seconds) by nearly a half second, placed second behind Selznick in the 100, then anchored the winning 400 free relay to close out the meet.
Sarah Davidson closed out her unbeaten weekend with wins Saturday in the 1,000 and 500 freestyles, having won the 1,650 and 500 Friday against Pacific. Her winning time in Saturday's 500, 5 minutes, 26.45 seconds, is her best time this season.
Abbey Felley in the 200 backstroke and
Becca Hoffman in the 200 breaststroke also recorded first-place finishes for Whitman.
Whitman won both relays and seven of the nine individual events, including a 1-2 finish in the 100 and 200 freestyles. Despite not winning the 200 individual medley,
Tara Stahlecker and
Maddy Gyongyosi teamed up to finish second and third for Whitman.
Clark Sun for the Blues men matched Selznick point for point and race for race.
The senior, also an NCAA qualifier last winter, swept the 100 and 200 freestyles Saturday -- just like Friday night -- and swam on a winning medley relay, the anchor leg, to open the men's event schedule against the Pios.
There were no other double-event winners for Whitman, but
Keith Nussbaum and
Colin Aslett came close.
Nussbaum won the 200 breaststroke, rallying from behind in the second 100, in the last individual event, and finished second in the 1,000 free in the initial individual event.
Aslett captured the 200 backstroke event and finished second in the 50 free.
Jonah Rodewald (200 IM) and
Fisher Munro (200 butterfly) were Whitman's other event winners.
The second outing of the Friday-Saturday back-to-backs is always a little tougher, and head coach
Jennifer Blomme knew Lewis & Clark would bring a challenge to her squads.
"We expected some really close match-ups," she noted, "and we didn't shy away from a single one.
"I'm thrilled with how our team showed up (Saturday)."
Whitman steps out of conference action for the next meet, but remains home at Harvey for a November 18 dual against College of Idaho.
