WALLA WALLA, Wash. Whitman's sixth-ranked women's basketball team never trailed in a 72-47 exhibition victory Thursday evening against the Mustangs from The Master's (Calif.) University, breaking out to an eight-point lead after the opening quarter and cultivating that advantage into an 18-point margin by halftime.
All 14 available players saw court time for head coach
Michelle Ferenz, with several of the first-year players having an impact on the outcome.
Sophomore returner
Makana Stone stole some of the thunder on the night, just missing a double-double -- after posting five during her first year with the program -- by scoring a game-best 13 points while ripping down eight rebounds.
Junior
Maegen Martin was the game's leader on the glass with nine boards, also just missing the double-double after dropping in 10 points including a 2-for-2 night from long range.
The hot shooter from beyond the arc, however, was first-year
Kaelan Shamseldin who rained down a 4-for-6 night from outside, on her way to a 12-point showing.
Emily Rommel also reached double-digits for Whitman, adding 11 points and pulling down five rebounds.
The Blues ruled the glass with a 50-30 rebounding advantage, and limited the Mustangs to just a 23 percent night from the floor.
Whitman opens its season Wednesday, Nov. 15 at Eastern Oregon University, then travels to Spokane, Washington, for the weekend's Ramada Inn at Spokane Airport Whit Classic where the Blues will face University of La Verne (Calif.) and Whittier (Calif.) College in a two-day event hosted by Whitworth University.
