SAN ANTONIO Thursday afternoon's national top-25 clash faded into a second-half romp for the Whitman women as the eighth-ranked Blues (Women's Basketball Coaches Association rankings) rolled to an 82-59 road victory at No. 13 Trinity (Texas) University, ending the Tigers' 21-game home win streak at Calgaard Gymnasium.
The win is the 10th in a row for Whitman (10-1) which won both of its games at Wednesday's and Thursday's Trinity Classic. The Tigers slip to 5-2 following a Wednesday win over University of Puget Sound and the loss to the Blues.
Tied, for the only time, early at 2-2 the Blues moved back in front on a
Casey Poe 3-pointer. The only other time Whitman's advantage was fewer than three points was at 16-15 with the Tigers dropping in the second quarter's opening basket.
A
Taylor Chambers trey from the left wing was the immediate answer, and from there the lead grew to as many as nine on four occasions during the second 10-minute frame.
The eight-point halftime lead, 41-33, pushed to 10 points with the opening bucket after the break, a
Makana Stone layup doing the trick.
Trinity responded with a layup and one at the 8:44 mark, a memorable mark in the quarter as Whitman didn't allow the Tigers to notch another field goal until 1:31 remained in the quarter, limiting its hosts to only a pair of free throws over that 7 minute, 13 second span.
It was early within that defensive streak -- which forced eight Trinity turnovers -- that the Blues increased the lead to 20 for the first time, converting a layup and one by
Sierra McGarity to lift the Blues to a 46-36 lead.
The final 10-minute quarter was more of the same for Whitman. The defense forced turnovers, blocked shots and fed a transition game that quickly converted opportunities, or worked their options around the arc.
Mady Burdett knocked down consecutive 3-pointers midway through the quarter, and Stone's short jumper outside the right block upped the cushion to 25, at 82-57, with 1:54 to play.
All 13 Whitman players saw court time and four hit double-figures in scoring, led by Poe's 22 points. Joining the preseason All-American in double digits were
Maegen Martin and
Emily Rommel with 12 points each, and McGarity with 10. Stone and Burdett both finished with eight points.
Rebounding proved to be a factor for the Blues as they finished the contest with a 44-29 advantage. Poe, Martin and McGarity pulled down seven boards apiece while Stone came down with six.
Whitman allowed just nine offensive rebounds by the Tigers, helping to limit the home team to just two second-chance points in 40 minutes.
Thursday's win was a far cry from the taut battle last season in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Division III tournament. The same two teams met in St. Paul, Minnesota, with Whitman advancing into the Elite 8 after a hard-fought 69-59 victory.
The Blues now get a lengthy break before heading back out onto the court, welcoming Pacific (Ore.) University and Lewis & Clark College to the Sherwood Athletic Center on January 5-6, respectively, for a pair of Northwest Conference games.
