TACOMA, Wash. Â Whitman showed little fatigue but plenty of fight less than 24 hours after taking sixth-ranked UPS to overtime.
The Blues dismantled host Pacific Lutheran 73-43 in Northwest Conference women's basketball Saturday to close out their conference road schedule.
Chelsi Brewer had 15 points and three steals in 18 minutes, and
Casey Poe added nine points and nine rebounds as Whitman (20-3, 11-3) dominated from wire to wire.
"I was proud of our response," Whitman head coach
Michelle Ferenz said. "We put (Friday's game) behind us and moved on, which is good, because we have some big games coming up."
The 15th-ranked Blues crushed the Lutes 56-30 on the glass and held PLU (1-22, 0-14) to 28 percent field goal shooting. No Whitman starter played more than 21 minutes in a contest it led 34-18 at halftime and 55-30 after three quarters.
Whitman, which has already clinched its seventh consecutive conference tournament appearance, remained tied with George Fox (11-3 in NWC) for the tourney's second seed. The Bruins survived Willamette 87-84 on Saturday, prevailing on Emily Spencer's 3-pointer at the buzzer.
If Whitman finishes second, it would host a conference tournament semifinal for the first time since the 2013-14 season on Feb. 23.
The Blues close out the regular season against George Fox on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Sherwood Center, and have already defeated the Bruins (82-74 on Jan. 22 in Newberg) in their first conference meeting. Whitman faces Lewis and Clark at home on Feb. 17.
Whitman reserves
Lily Gustafson and
Anissia Hughes had eight points apiece as the Blues' bench racked up 37 points against the Lutes. Hughes, a 5-foot-4 first-year guard, had eight rebounds -- three more than any PLU player.
"Once (the bench) relaxed, they looked solid," said Ferenz.
Senior starter
Alysse Ketner had nine rebounds and a team-high five assists in 19 quality minutes for the winners,
Mady Burdett had six rebounds and three steals, and
Emily Rommel added seven points and six rebounds.
Whitman controlled the first half, despite easing up on the gas down the second-quarter stretch. Brewer had 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the first quarter and was complemented nicely by the interior work of Rommel (six first-quarter points). Whitman led 20-7 after one.
Brewer also had two of the Blues' seven first-half steals.
Poe had all seven of her first-half points in the second quarter and grabbed six rebounds before halftime. Ketner dished three of Whitman's seven assists (on the team's 11 field goals).
Whitman largest lead of the second quarter was 32-9. The Lutes labored through a five-turnover, one-basket stretch to open that quarter before salvaging things with a 9-2 run into halftime.
The Blues opened the second half on a 17-4 run.
