GEORGETOWN, Texas  Four different players scored for the Whitman women's lacrosse team in a 16-4 non-conference loss Saturday to Occidental (Calif.), played at Varsity Fields on the campus of Southwestern University.
Mary Noyes,
Sarah Myers,
Nina Moore and
Lindsay Schwartz notched unassisted goals for the third-year Blues (0-2) who got off to a slow start against the Tigers (1-0) who are in their eighth season of competition.
Occidental wasn't able to solve the Whitman defense nor goalkeeper
Kate Whittingham for nearly seven minutes after the opening draw control, but the first goal with 23:05 remaining in the opening half signaled the start of a five-goal run that was finally interrupted by Noyes' successful free-position opportunity nine minutes later.
The next nine goals scored went up on the Oxy side of the scoreboard, however, leaving the Blues with a huge mountain to climb over the final 20 minutes of action.
Myers' tally, her first of the year, did begin to steal some momentum back, and even then the Tigers answered that goal Whitman had finally found its legs with Moore then Schwartz scoring in succession. Moore's was an unassisted marker while Schwartz converted her free-position attemp three minutes after Moore's score.
Whitman did win the draw control battle for the day, 13-9, but Oxy reeled off 39 shots and scored seven times from its 10 free-position attempts.
Whittingham finished the afternoon with 16 saves, with her Oxy counterpart, Neah Bois picking up the win after coming away with 10 saves.
The Blues return to the Northwest for their next game, a non-conference match-up on February 26 in Tacoma, Washington, against Alma (Mich.) College.
