WALLA WALLA, Wash. Â
Mary Noyes and
Lindsay Schwartz pocketed four goals apiece Saturday as Whitman pounded out an 18-7 Northwest Conference victory over visiting University of Puget Sound at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Six other players scored for the Blues (3-3, 2-1 NWC) who have now won three straight over the Loggers (2-2, 1-1) dating back to last season.
Whitman's initial push off the opening draw control seemed to spell doom for UPS as the Blues scored a trio of unanswered goals in just over two minutes, without the Loggers possessing the ball for even one second.
Noyes, with her 10th of the season, opened the scoring at the 28:10 mark after the Blues won that first draw control and cycled their attack around the UPS net.
Ellie Teare picked up the assist on the game-opening score.
With the Athletic Fields still ringing from the scoreboard horn, Schwartz won the ensuing draw control and raced down field for an unassisted goal four seconds later. It took only 10 seconds for her to add another, this won coming off an assist from Noyes.
After surrendering that third goal the Loggers were finally able to reach their attacking third, and they made the most of the opportunity by cutting into the three-goal deficit with a score from Meghan Bacher.
Though
Anna Melville restored the three-goal lead for Whitman minutes later the Loggers pushed two in a row past Whitman goalkeeper
Kate Whittingham to narrow the gap to just one.
The Blues righted the ship however, scoring 13 of the game's next 14 goals spanning the remainder of the opening half and the early minutes of the second.
Five unanswered goals in a four-minute span started the run, with only a free-position goal from the Loggers sneaking in between those five and an eight-goal barrage that followed.
The Blues surrendered three goals in the final nine minutes but the game's outcome had long been decided by that point.
Noyes added four assists to her day for a career-best eight-point day, and also came up with a pair of ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover.
Schwartz was dangerous not only around the UPS net but across the field as she registered game-bests in draw controls (nine) and caused turnovers (three).
Defensively, Teare and
Sarah Myers piled up three ground balls each as the Blues forced 26 turnovers and limited the Loggers to only 18 shots.
Whittingham earned the win in goal for Whitman, finishing the afternoon with four saves.
The Blues continue home conference action with their next game, Sunday at 12 p.m., against Linfield College at the Athletic Fields.
