McMINNVILLE, Ore. Â Whitman batters weren't able to find timely hits Sunday at Roy Helser Field, dropping a 10-inning 4-3 decision and a 6-1 game to host Willamette University in a doubleheader on the campus of Linfield College.
Originally scheduled for Willamette's Salem, Oregon, campus the games were moved to Linfield's turf at Helser Field after a rainy week in Salem left the Bearcats' field questionable for a four-game series.
The team's split Saturday's series with Willamette picking up the nightcap in extra innings.
Sunday's opener also went to extras, but the Blues (9-9, 4-4 NWC) had opportunities to close out the game earlier.
Anthony Lim's lead-off single in the top of the sixth translated into a run with
Nick Johnson's two-out single into left field. But the inning ended with the bases jammed and only one run plated.
Two innings earlier the Blues had pushed across a run, unearned, and had runners on the corners with two outs. An infield ground out ended that threat, though. And a nearly identical scenario happened in the seventh.
Trailing by a run in the top of the ninth,
Jake Wishart led off the frame reaching safely as a hit batter. A sacrifice bunt moved him over and a pair of wild pitches completed his journey to even the game at 3-3.
Willamette pitching hit another batter then walked one with two outs, but a noisy flyout into the gap in left-center field put a close to the inning.
Jasper Crusberg's two-out single through the left side in the top of the 10th provided another chance, but a foul pop-up stopped that opportunity in its tracks.
The Bearcats got a one-out single in the bottom of the 10th then pushed the run home to pull out a victory during which Whitman left 12 runners on base including six in scoring position.
Jimmey Smiley (2-1) allowed just two hits after coming on in relief with one out in the 10th but was saddled with the loss.
The meat of the order for the Blues -- Lim,
Joseph Zimmer,
Adrian Vela and
Lucas Thrun -- each collected hits in the loss.
Whitman drew first blood in Game 2, as Zimmer's two-out single up the middle got the ball rolling. He advanced on a wild pitch then came around to score on Vela's single through the right side.
That would prove to be the highlight of the night from the batter's box for the Blues as the weren't able to reach Willamette pitching for any more damage.
Four different innings saw base runners for Whitman but each time they were left stranded, including someone at third in the fifth and ninth innings.
Willamette, however, pushed three runs across in the second, added another in the sixth, and two more in the eighth in building its cushion for an eventual doubleheader sweep.
Henry Lin (0-1) started and took the loss for Whitman, lasting six innings but surrendering four of the six Bearcats runs.
The Blues are back home at Borleske Stadium for their next series, a pair of doubleheader contests against visiting George Fox University on Saturday and Sunday.
