McMINNVILLE, Ore. For the second day in a row Whitman's women's lacrosse team put forth a dominant second half to spark another easy victory. Saturday at Maxwell Field the Blues doubled up their first-half totals to race past host Linfield College, 15-5, in a Northwest Conference match that signaled the conclusion of the highly successful Whitman season.
A 9-6 overall record marks the first winning season of Whitman's third-year program, and its 6-2 conference mark locks in a second-place finish within the league standings.
Linfield (1-12, 0-6) did its best to challenge the Blues during first-half action, never trailing by more than two and pulling within one late in the half until
Lindsay Schwartz' buzzer beater sent Whitman into the halftime break with a 5-3 advantage.
The score at intermission was deceiving, though, as the Blues held the Wildcats without a shot for the opening 12 minutes of action. In all, Linfield was only able to manage four shots in the half, but three of those found the back of the goal.
Like with Saturday's victory -- when the Blues scored seven unanswered goals to end the game in an 11-goal victory -- Whitman again dominated second-half action.
Mary Noyes,
Anna Melville and
Nina Moore each scored unassisted goals at the start of the second to pad the halftime lead. And though Linfield ended that string with a goal by Dana Brooks, Noyes began another three-goal spurt with her 35th of the year, followed by two by Schwartz.
A free position goal halted the streak, only to see Schwartz begin another. This one stretched to four unanswered goals as Schwartz notched her sixth, seventh and eighth of the game while Noyes tossed in one more for her fourth score.
Shot totals in the second half were even more tilted in Whitman's favor, 20-4, growing an advantage in the attacking third to a final 34-8 margin.
The middle of the field was also ruled by the Blues who piled up a 17-4 draw control edge to help dominate possession.
Schwartz entered the day as the league's leading goal scorer and did nothing to harm her chances at finishing in that position, scoring a game-best eight goals. Her draw control numbers, 11, also led all players while her five caused turnovers were tied with teammate
Nina Moore for game-high honors.
Noyes added four goals and Moore chipped in with two.
Three seniors played in their final collegiate games in the win.
Anna Melville scored once, came up with three ground balls, and added in a draw control win and a caused turnover.
Dana Casterella and
Natalie McBranch were part of the defensive corps that stifled Linfield's chances in its attacking third. McBranch registered three caused turnovers and Casterella added one while limiting Linfield's two leading scorers (18 goals each) to just three on Saturday.
In each year since the program's initial two-win season the Blues have doubled their win total from the previous season. The 2016 campaign provided four victories to the spring totals, and the nine this season again doubled the figures for a new high-water mark for head coach
Kate Robinson's burgeoning program.
