Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Gregg Petcoff

Goalies play big in Blues vs. Corban match

WALLA WALLA, Wash.  Whitman's Blues and Corban's Warriors went toe-to-toe through most of Saturday's non-conference men's soccer match under the lights of the Whitman Athletic Fields.

With the goalkeepers playing big, the scoreboard got a rest until the 79th minute when Corban (3-0) would score the first of a pair of goals within four minutes to sneak away late with a 2-0 victory over the Blues (0-2).

Whitman's Owen Davis-Bower notched a save in the first half, before seeing a more active second 45 minutes, within which he made five saves -- including two diving stops that he got enough of his fingertips on to deflect the shots off his gloves and then crossbars.

The Blues were putting a challenge to Warriors netminder Jordan Farr at the other end of the pitch for much of the game, too.

Farr had to stop Sam Johnson, Peter Stephens and Noah Cavanaugh in the first half, then stepped up with saves against Jimmy Jacobson, CJ Fritz and Ben Freedman in the second half.

Both of Corban's markers came from touches close to the end line and sent back out toward the middle of the box where Timur Zhividze then Alex Segovia were finally able to crack the wall Whitman's defense and Davis-Bower had erected.

Shot totals were fairly even as Corban finished the night with 16, only three more than Whitman's attacking efforts would produce.

The Blues will try to find their first win of the season on the East Coast, where they'll face off against Ramapo College, Rutgers-Newark and Drew University in New Jersey on Sept. 7, 9 and 10, respectively.
