O’Roy’s 1st pulls Blues even

FOREST GROVE, Ore.  Capping off a tale of two half's, Whitman's Jordan O'Roy poked home the equalizing goal with 55 seconds left in regulation to help the Blues finish Saturday with a 2-2 double-overtime draw with host Pacific (Ore.) University in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at the Boxers' Ledbetter Field.

Pacific (0-5-2, 0-2-1 NWC) had the better of action in the first half, notching a pair of goals four minutes apart during a 45-minute half in which it out shot Whitman 9-0.

But the Blues (1-5-1, 1-1-1) began chipping away in the second half, eventually cutting the deficit in the 76th with a goal from Renee van Bergeijk. O'Roy rocketed a shot from 35 yards out that clanged off the crossbar, bouncing back into the field of play where van Bergeijk easily collected the short rebound and slotted a quick shot into the right side.

Both teams generated chances within two minutes of that goal, but neither try ended up in the net.

With time winding down in the final minute and Whitman pressing its attack, a sustained Blues presence deep in the box resulted in a loose ball which O'Roy was able to tap in for the tying goal.

Neither team generated a shot in the first 10-minute overtime period, though Pacific earned a corner kick chance, and the same held true, with Whitman earning the lone corner opportunity, in the second overtime, leaving the teams knotted at two at the final horn.

Whitman's Allie Seracuse had a solid game in goal for the Blues, coming up with four saves, including a diving stop just before halftime to keep the Boxers from extending their lead.

Conference action continues Sunday for Whitman as it travels to George Fox University for a 12 p.m. match.
