WALLA WALLA, Wash. Â
Megan Henry led the attack with 13 kills,
Anna Dawson dished out 19 set assists and the blockers at the net combined for 14 block assists Wednesday evening as Whitman College rolled to a 3-0 win over visiting Blue Mountain Community College in an exhibition volleyball match in the Sherwood Athletic Center.
From the opening service Henry and the Blues gave notice this was going to be a tough night for the Timberwolves. A BMCC serve by Grace Roko turned into Henry's first kill of the night at the start of the opening game, and Whitman never looked back.
They built a quick 6-1 lead in the first game, never trailing in a 25-16 win. In Game 2 they also never trailed and finished off the penultimate game with a 25-15 victory.
Blue Mountain finally had their time in the sun at the start of the third, but an on-again, off-again lead in the early going was turned at 6-5 with a
Brooke Randall kill to draw Whitman even, and a pair of service aces by
Kalli Dickey that pushed the Blues in front for good. The Timberwolves maintained a closer tie to Whitman's score over the remainder of the game but the Blues were able to finish it, and the match, off with a 25-19 win.
Henry's 13-kill night was accented by only one attacking error getting attributed to the match-leader in kills. Both
Codie Conching -- who had a match-high four service aces -- and
Katie Sisson added five kills apiece to help the Blues' attacking efforts.
Defensively,
Claire McCarthy scooped up a team-leading 11 digs behind front-row blocking efforts that left BMCCÂ with a paltry .082 attack percentage. Randall and Henry collected three block assists each, with
Lara Temel adding two. Six others notched one block assist in the dominant net performance.
Whitman plays a non-conference match, Saturday at Lewis-Clark State College, before embarking on the Northwest Conference slate, which begins September 15 and 16 at University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University, respectively.
