Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Gregg Petcoff

Blues taken by Sharks

MAUI, Hawaii  Playing one of the best NCAA Division II teams in the nation, Whitman's Division III women's tennis team suffered its second defeat in two days to host Hawaii Pacific University, slipping to the Sharks by a 9-0 score Friday at the Wailea Tennis Center.

The same two teams squared off Thursday with the same result.

The Blues juggled their lineup a bit from the previous day's match with Mary Hill taking on Lena Lutzeier -- D-II's ninth-ranked singles player -- at 1-singles. Lutzeier cashed out a straight-set win over Hill.

Andrea Gu dropped into the 2-singles slot for Whitman and played Lara Meccico, ranked 10th nationally, and was dealt the same straight-set result as was Hill.

The Nos. 5 and 6 singles slots for Whitman, Hanna Greenberg and Lori Sheng, respectively, played well against their HPU opponents, grabbing several games from their Sharks counterparts. But they, too, were defeated in straight sets.

Head coach John Hein also fiddled with the doubles pairings slightly, pairing Gu with Anastasiya Redkina at 1-doubles, Greenberg with Hill at No. 2, and Sheng with Kattie Pak at 3-doubles.

The shuffled lineups put up a challenge to their opponents, but in the end HPU was able to sweep the doubles points.

"These matches were a fantastic jump start to our season," said Hein. "HPU is such a strong D-II program, and the way we competed against it is making us stronger."

Whitman (0-2) returns home to the mainland and the Northwest and will next take on D-I Boise State in Boise on Saturday, Jan. 20.
