Women’s tennis challenges Boise State

BOISE, Idaho  Whitman's women's tennis team stepped up two divisions in competition level Saturday as the 27th-ranked Blues of Division III took on D-I Boise State at the Broncos' Boas Indoor Tennis Center.

The home team won the match 7-0, but not without a lot of fight from Whitman.

Boise State swept the three doubles matches to earn the one point from those matches. However, midway through the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches it was the Blues holding leads.

Hanna Greenberg and Mary Hill stormed out to a 3-1 lead in the top match, but the Broncos tandem of Anja Dokic and Wiktoria Nosek rallied to take five of the next six games to steal a 6-4 victory.

At 2-doubles it was Andrea Gu and Cello Lockwood rallying from a 2-1 deficit to jump in front 3-2 over Boise's Jovana Kuljanin and Wilhelmina Palmer. Similar to the 1-doubles match, though, the Broncos pairing won four of the next five games to close out their own 6-4 win and clinch the doubles point for the home team.

Greenberg used momentum gained from playing so well in doubles to roll into her 3-singles match, taking the first set, 6-4, from Hanna Kantenwein. The Boise player evened the match with a 6-1 triumph in the second, then completed the come-back with a 1-0 (10-3) win in the third-set tiebreaker.

That would be the highlight of the morning for the Blues' singles players, though each Whitman player racked up game victories during their straight-set defeats.

The Blues continue the non-conference portion of the schedule with their next match, playing NAIA opponent and host Lewis-Clark State College on February 11.
