McMINNVILLE, Ore. Whitman's 27th-ranked women's team made quick work of Hardin-Simmons (Texas) University on Friday evening, blanking the Cowgirls, 9-0, in a neutral-site, non-conference match.
The win was the Blues' first (1-3) this season, though their three losses earlier in the spring came against Division-I and –II opponents. Hardin-Simmons slips to 0-8 with the loss.
Whitman's three doubles pairings set the tone, surrendering a total of just two games during the Blues' doubles sweep.
Andrea Gu and Lorin Sheng shut out their opponents, 8-0, at 2-singles for the first point. At No. 1 the tandem of
Hanna Greenberg and
Mary Hill raced to an 8-1 win to finish just before
Kattie Pak and
Anastasiya Redkina finished off their opponents at 3-singles by the same score.
Greenberg's 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles brought the Blues to within a point of clinching the match, a feat that was accomplished by Hill at No. 1 by the identical 1 and 0 result.
Gu at No. 2, Redkina at No. 5,
Jenna Gilbert at No. 6, and Sheng at 4-singles each closed out straight-set wins to finish off the shutout victory.
Whitman takes the momentum from Saturday's win into the opening of its Northwest Conference slate Sunday in Salem, Ore., where the Blues will take on host Willamette University in an 11 a.m. match.
