Women's Volleyball Too Much For Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. - Codie Conching led a well balanced attack with nine kills and 12 digs and the Whitman College women's volleyball team snapped a four-match skid with a dominant 25-14, 25-15, 25-22 sweep at Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action on Friday night.

The Blues (7-10, 3-6 NWC) committed just nine total errors while hitting at a solid .246 clip. Kortney Meyer led the Pioneers with a match-high 11 kills but her and her LC teammates were no match for Whitman at the net as the Blues doubled up Lewis & Clark in the block department with 16. Sierra Myers had an overall solid effort with six kills, five digs and five blocks.

Ka'anel Pakaki-Pias added a match-high 14 digs for the Pios (9-7, 2-7 NWC) with Mikayla Lopez and Annika San Nicolas each adding 12 of their own.

The Blues opened up an early first-set lead and never looked back. A pair of kills from Brooke Randall and aces from Myers and Tate Cadang helped Whitman to a 10-6 lead. A Kalli Dickey kill helped push the advantage to 10 points and the Blues coasted from there.

Set two was more of the same as back-to-back kills from Myers and Conching helped build an 11-6 lead. Later, Randall and Dickey got in on a block and each drilled a kill of their own as part of a 9-2 set-clinching run.

Completing the sweep would be no picnic as the Pios opened up an 8-3 set-three lead keyed by three straight kills from Meyer. A 7-0 Blues run righted the ship but Lewis & Clark regrouped to take an 18-15 lead. Trailing by four points late in the set, Whitman called a timeout and responded with an 8-1 run to win the set and nail down the sweep.

The Blues return to the court on Saturday at Willamette. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
