Hetherington's Goal, Assist Lead Blues To Win Over Lewis & Clark

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Pagan Hetherington's goal just before halftime and a clean sheet from Allie Seracuse guided the Whitman College women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Lewis & Clark in Northwest Conference action Saturday at the Whitman Athletics Field.

Sophie Brussell and Sofia Ellington added second half goals within three minutes apart to seal the win for the Blues who improved to 2-8-1 and 2-5 in league play. Lewis & Clark dropped to 3-7-1 overall and 1-6 in the Northwest Conference.

Good early possession by the Blues helped penetrate the Pioneer defense resulting in several scoring chances. Whitman continued to play in its attacking third but the Pioneers would start to develop possession of their own, leading to a pair of serious scoring opportunities when Giana Losson and Anjali Kothari both had their shots from the top of penalty ricochet off the crossbar.

Hetherington would break the scoreless draw just before halftime. On a Whitman break down the left flank, Emily Rigsby found Hetherington inside the penalty area who finished in the upper right corner past Pioneer keeper Megan Sawyer.

After Brussell's goal in the 55th minute, Hetherington tacked on an assist to her stat line, feeding Hetherington behind the Pioneer defense who slotted a shot past Abby Prager who had subbed in for Lewis & Clark at halftime.

The Blues return to action Sunday against George Fox University for more Northwest Conference action. Kick off at the Whitman Athletic Fields is set for noon.
