WALLA WALLA, Wash. –
Sofia Ellington scored a late goal in regulation and assisted on two others to propel the Whitman College women's soccer team to its second straight win, a 4-3 overtime defeat of George Fox in Northwest Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
After Ellington converted on a penalty kick to tie the game in the 81
st minute, she set up the gamewinner when she was dragged down in the penalty area less than two minutes into the first overtime.
Renee van Bergeijk stepped up to the spot and slotted the kick into the left side netting to give Whitman (3-8-1, 3-5 NWC) the sudden victory win.
Bryanna Schreiber posted eight saves for the Blues including a breakaway save off a Puka Ahina shot just seconds into the game. Annalisa Klein recorded four saves for the Bruins (3-6-1, 1-6-1 NWC).
The Blues never led before van Bergeijk's gamewinner and even trailed 2-0 early in the first half. George Fox dominated the game early with Ahina scoring both first half goals on rebounds off Schreiber saves, the second from her own strike.
Whitman found its rhythm, taking advantage of its first major opportunity when Ellington delivered a cross from the left flank that
Kate Prudent headed past Klein to cut into the lead with 18 minutes to play in the first half.
Marshall then brought the Blues all the way back with a goal less than 10 minutes later. Ellington delivered a service along the floor that skidded by Prudent but found Marshall's foot after her far post run into the box.
Chloe Shumaker gave the Bruins the lead, finishing a service from Michala Denn which possibly looked to be the gamewinner, but Ellington in regulation and van Bergeijk in overtime converted their spot kicks to give the Blues the win.
Whitman returns to the pitch next weekend with home matches against Puget Sound on Saturday, Sept. 13 and versus Pacific Lutheran on Sunday, Sept. 14. Kickoff for both is set for 12:00 p.m.
