Women's Basketball Drops Opener At Eastern Oregon

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Makana Stone led a well-balanced scoring effort with 11 points while grabbing 10 rebounds, and the Whitman College women's basketball team rallied late but came up short in a season-opening 52-49 loss at Eastern Oregon University on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

Kaylie McCracken posted nine points and five rebounds and Mady Burdett added nine points of her own while equaling teammate Taylor Chambers in dishing out a team-high three assists. Stone also added three blocks and three steals.

Beverly Slater dropped a game-high 15 points for the Mountaineers (1-2) with Khadija Neumeyer corralling 13 rebounds, also a game high.

The Blues (0-1) trailed by double digits with 7:03 to play in the fourth quarter before Whitman got its inside game working. A layup from Maegen Martin coupled by jumpers from Stone and Chambers shaved the lead to 47-43 with 5:35 to play. Another bucket by Stone and a pair of made free throws from Kaelan Shamseldin kept the EOU lead to just three points with just under three minutes to play, but the Blues would go cold, going 0-5 from the floor to finish the game and drop their opener.

The first quarter featured a very even contest but the Mountaineers began to take control in the second quarter. After Stone's bucket with 5:02 to play until halftime, the Blues went cold from the floor to help EOU carry a 28-19 lead into the break. The Mountaineers extended their advantage to as many as 11 points in the third quarter before going up 10 points heading to the fourth.

The Blues play their home opener this Wednesday, Oct. 14 against Walla Walla University. Tipoff at the Sherwood Athletic Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
