Career Night From Van Buren Paces Women's Basketball Past Williams

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Brittaney Van Buren had a career night off the bench, delivering a double double with career highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Whitman College women's basketball team to a 64-59 win over Williams College, Thursday night in the Hyatt Place December Classic held at Kaiser Permanente Arena.

Mady Burdett and Makana Stone both added 12 points for the Blues (7-3) with Stone putting up five blocks. Whitman had to fight off the Ephs to the very end after leading by as many as 14 points toward the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, Emily Chang's three pointer shaved the lead to only five points with 2:21 to play, but buckets from both Stone and Burdett down the stretch put the game away.

For the Ephs (5-5), Maggie Meehan led all scorers with 19 points with Katie Brule adding a six points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Van Buren, who also added four assists and three steals in her stellar effort, did most of her damage in the first half shooting 4-5 from the floor for nine points while also grabbing six boards. Whitman did the work on the defensive end and held the Ephs to 30% shooting from the floor to lead 32-28 at the break.

The Blues expanded their lead to 12 points after doubling up Williams in the third quarter. Baskets from Lily Gustafson and Kaylie McCracken coupled with a fast break three pointer from Kaelan Shamseldin spearheaded a 10-2 Whitman run and a 42-30 lead with 6:03 to play in the period. The Blues ran the court to the tune of a 8-0 fast break point advantage for the game.

Burdett's three pointer to open the fourth gave the Blues their biggest lead of the quarter at 15 points, but Williams would slowly chip away, shaving the lead to single digits after an and-one three pointer from Meehan. The Blues would hit their free throws down the stretch and sink some timely baskets to seal the win.

Whitman closes the Classic and 2018 tomorrow with a matchup against University of Northwestern (MN). Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
