WALLA WALLA, Wash. Â Whitman's baseball team battled back from 2-0, 4-1 and 7-5 deficits to push Sunday's Northwest Conference contest against visiting Pacific (Ore.) University into extra innings -- for the second straight game after doing so Saturday night.
But like with the game before it was the Boxers who stole the win in extras, taking Sunday's finale of a three-game set at Borleske Stadium by a 10-8 count in 10 innings.
The Blues (3-8, 0-3 NWC) had fought back from that 4-1 deficit to move in front, 5-4, in the seventh inning with
Lucas Thrun's two-out, two-run shot over the right-field fence. The home run plated
Anthony Lim, who had reached earlier on a one-out single into center field.
The advantage was short-lived as three of the first five batters in Pacific's eighth inning scored, lifting the Boxers (7-4, 3-0) in front again.
Like with the early hole, and with Thrun's deficit-eating shot, Whitman once again produced in their half of an inning, tying the game up with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Tyler Lewis reached on an error and advanced to third on
Court Osborn's single into right.
Two batters later Lewis raced home and Osborn moved to second on a wild pitch. An infield ground out allowed Osborn to move to third from where trotted home for the tying run on an RBI-single into left by
Brett Williams.
An uneventful ninth sent the 7-7 game into extra innings.
Saturday's late game of a doubleheader had been knotted at 2-2 since the fourth inning, and went scoreless until the Boxers scored twice in the 12th, and then held off Whitman in the bottom of the inning.
Sunday's contest would take but just one extra frame.
A lead-off single by Pacific's Chase Anderson turned into a three-run inning, forcing the Blues to try to come up with yet another rally.
Tyler Lewis' one-out double began that rally, but it would fall short with just one run -- Lewis scoring on an
Anthony Nevoso single into left -- allowing the Boxers to finish off the series sweep.
Thrun was an RBI-maker for Whitman Sunday, adding two more prior to his dinger with a two-run double in the fifth that scored
Joseph Zimmer and Williams.
Lewis, Lim and Thrun each had two hits apiece in Whitman's 11-hit attack. The Blues were fairly efficient with their chances -- leaving only four runners in scoring position throughout the game -- but certainly wish any one of those opportunities had produced just one more run.
Charlie Carmichael started on the mound for the Blues, tossing 4.0 innings and surrendering four runs on five hits but receiving a no decision after the Blues bounced back three innings after he departed the game.
Reliever
Milo Mincin (0-1) went 4.2 innings and took the loss for Whitman, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk.
The Blues take to the road for their next outings, a three-game set at Whitworth University beginning with Saturday's doubleheader and concluding with a single game on Sunday.
