Lin wins behind lots of support

CLAREMONT, Calif.  Whitman starting pitcher Henry Lin was dialed in Sunday at Arce Field, the home of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

The senior righty threw five scoreless innings, not allowing a hit until the fourth, while the Blues attack scored the first dozen of what would become a 19-6 non-conference victory of the host stags.

The victory concludes Whitman's season-opening trip into Southern California, and evens the team's record at 2-2 with a second consecutive victory. The loss ends a two-game win streak by the Stags (2-2).

While Lin was taking care of business on the bump, the Whitman batters were rolling through the lineup. The Blues put the leadoff batter on six times, and scored multiple runs in five innings while adding a solo run in another.

Jake Wishart initiated the romp with a double down the left-field line to open the second inning. Tyler Lewis followed with a double to the spot, scoring Wishart for the first run of what would be many.

Claremont starter Nick Ludwig wasn't missing many bats, but it was an infield error that turned into a pair of unearned runs as Lewis then Jerick Nomura scored after the miscue.

The 3-0 lead grew in the next frame after Lewis drew a one-out walk. Anthony Nevoso doubled into the left-center gap to bring Lewis all the way around, then Nevoso moved up a base on a wild pitch before racing home on another wild offering by Ludwig.

The top of the fourth, with Nick DeGallier relieving Ludwig at its start, padded the lead with another pair of runs, courtesy of a two-RBI single into left field by Kyle Reisman. Joseph Zimmer and Brett Williams scored on the hit.

A CMS pitching change to start the fifth inning didn't work as planned as the Blues  broke the game open with a five-run frame.

The first five batters of the inning reached base without needing to swing as three were walked, two were hit by pitches and one of the two runs scored in that span came via another wild pitch.

The only hit of the inning, a two-RBI double by Reisman, was accompanied by a Thrun sacrifice fly and a total of four walks, two hit by pitch at-bats, and two wild pitches.

When the top half of the frame ended, one CMS livestream announcer quipped that, "the Blues, with a dozen runs, are singing a happy tune today."

The solo run in the sixth preceded a six-run eighth to push Whitman's total to what would be its highest since a 20-18 victory in March of 2016 over Bethany Lutheran (Minn.) College. That number equaled the total from a 20-10 win over Simpson (Calif.) University in 2006.

No single player paced the 13-hit Whitman attack, but rather, the collective did the work with nine different players registering a hit, six adding in one double apiece, and eight players registering at least one RBI -- led by Reisman's four.

Save for a bumpy sixth inning, the four relievers that followed Lin prevented the Stags from ever really thinking about a historic comeback.

Lin (1-0) earned the win with 5.0 innings of work in which he allowed just two hits and three walks while fanning four in an efficient 76 pitches.

Whitman returns to the Northwest for its next outings, participating in the Northwest Conference Round Robin on Feb. 10-11. The Blues will take on NWC foes Pacific Lutheran University and Linfield College on Saturday, and George Fox University and Pacific (Ore.) University on Sunday in a quartet of games that will be played as non-league contests.
