NEWBERG, Ore. The doubles tandems of
Daniel Foster and
Alex Hwang, and
Gary Ho and
Andreas Mueller-Immergluck set No. 11 Whitman on the right path Saturday at the George Fox University Tennis Center, earning the first two points of the day in doubles action for the Blues who finished off the afternoon with a 7-2 Northwest Conference victory over the host Bruins.
Whitman (7-2, 5-0 NWC) remains unbeaten in league play while Fox (4-1, 2-1) drops its first conference match of the spring.
Foster and Hwang recorded an 8-6 at 2-doubles over the brothers duo of Alex and Payton Namba, while Ho and Mueller-Immergluck were out-dueling Keaton Baker and Tristen Lerma, 8-3 on the next court.
Hwang at No. 6 and
Chase Friedman at No. 5 added the fastest points of the afternoon for the Blues in singles action, with Hwang taking a 6-4, 6-0 win and Friedman rolling out a 1 and 1 victory for two of Whitman's four straight-set wins. Foster, 7-6 and 6-1, at 4-singles and Ho, 2 and 4, at No. 3 were the other two.
Ben Kirsh was pushed by William Leach at 2-singles. The Bruin led off the match with a 6-4 opening-set victory, but Kirsh came back with a 6-2 win to square the match followed by a 6-3 win in the third to add to the Blues' win total.
Whitman steps out of conference action for its next matches, to be played in Southern California over spring break.
First up will be a bout at Whittier College on March 12, followed by a neutral-site match Claremont, Calif., against No. 9 Amherst (Mass.) College. Two days later the Blues take on No. 32 Swarthmore (Pa.) College in Pasadena, then No. 4 Bowdoin (Maine) College the next day before concluding the trip against No. 23 University of the South (Tenn) on March 17 in Pepperdine, Calif.
