WALLA WALLA, Wash. A dominating performance Saturday in the singles matches closed out a 9-0 win for 29th-ranked Whitman over visiting George Fox University in Northwest Conference women's tennis action at the Whitman Tennis Courts.
The Blues (4-4, 3-1 NWC) broke out to a 3-0 lead over the Bruins (3-4, 1-2) after the doubles matches and posted straight-set wins in singles action for the victory.
All-Americans (ITA)
Andrea Gu and
Hanna Greenberg took a quick 8-2 win at 1-doubles, while
Mary Hill and
Anastasiya Redkina added another win at No. 2 by the same score.
That left the tandem of
Jenna Gilbert and
Lori Sheng on the court against Fox's Sophia Lawrence and Laney Search.
The Whitman duo were pushed to an extra game, but eventually closed out the sweep with a 9-7 triumph.
"We mixed up our doubles (teams) today, showing great versatility and toughness in getting up 3-0," said head coach
John Hein about his team's fast start.
Redkina was the first to topple her GFU opponent on the singles courts, taking down Emily Brink by a commanding 6-1, 6-0 count.
Kattie Pak provided the match-clinching point for the Blues, scoring a love and 1 win at No. 6 over Fox's Taylor Morris.
In all, Whitman's six singles players dropped a combined total of just 12 games during their two-set wins.
The Blues welcome 30th-ranked Lewis & Clark to the outdoor courts Sunday in a 9 a.m. conference match.
