WALLA WALLA, Wash. Whitman junior
Lindsay Schwartz scored 28 seconds into Sunday's Northwest Conference women's lacrosse contest and that would be as close as visiting Linfield College would be in the Blues' 19-6 victory at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Sophomore
Nina Moore scored the next two tallies -- part of her game-high seven goals -- to push the Whitman (1-1, 1-1 NWC) lead to 3-0 over a Wildcats (2-2, 2-1) team that suffered its first league loss of the season with Sunday's result.
By halftime the advantage had become 13-3 as the Blues built their lead from 28 shots in the opening 30 minutes.
Moore -- a second-team all-conference player in 2017 -- was too much to handle, notching all of her markers in that opening half to cover more than half of Whitman's scoring.
Her first of the day included a dodge that left her Wildcat defender staring at nothing but air, leaving Moore one on one with Linfield goalkeeper Kylee Duey. A quick flick into the top, right corner signaled the start of a career day for Moore.
First-year
Sage Ali assisted on Moore's third, fourth and seventh tallies and first-year
Hannah Miller aided Moore's fifth goal.
Ali tossed in three goals herself, and Schwartz piled up four more to finish the sunny afternoon with five goals.
Second-half action was less frantic as the Blues worked their transition game and cycle play in their offensive third while outscoring the Wildcats 6-3 over the game's final 30 minutes.
Coming up big on defense for Whitman was goalie
Kate Whittingham who registered a five-save performance that included stops on each of Linfield's three free position shot attempts.
In the attacking third the Blues went 4-for-7 in free position opportunities.
Noteworthy season firsts on the day came from sophomore
Olivia Engle who scored her first of the season, and Miller and Moore who each picked up their first assists of the spring.
Whitman will now head to Florida for the 2018 SpringFling where it will take on Eastern Connecticut State, Ramapo (N.J.) College, No. 17 Messiah (Pa.) College and Hendrix (Ark.) College in non-conference contests between March 13 and 18.
