ENGLEWOOD, Fla. Whitman closed a gap just before halftime to cut a large deficit into a manageable one, but Ramapo (N.J.) College quieted the Blues' attack in the second half to finish off a 22-10 victory in non-conference women's lacrosse action at the 2018 SpringFling.
Lindsay Schwartz scored a pair of goals for Whitman (1-3) just before halftime to chop a deficit to 13-8, but the Blues would only score twice in the final 30 minutes against a clamped-down Ramapo (1-2) defense.
The Roadrunners at one point owned a 6-1 lead in the first half, but Schwartz then
Hannah Miller, with two, would score three unanswered markers to bring Whitman back into the game.
Ramapo answered with three of their own only to have the Blues fight back with goals from
Sage Ali and Schwartz.
Four straight tallies by the Roadrunners as the half neared its end looked to help seal the deal until Schwartz added her fourth and fifth goals of the opening 30 minutes.
Ramapo would come out of the halftime break to score six unanswered before
Nina Moore and then Miller would break that string.
Those would be the final highlights of the Whitman attack, however.
Schwartz would lead all scorers with her five goals, but Ramapo's success in creating free position shots proved to be too much to overcome. The Roadrunners converted 8-of-12 of their opportunities, while Whitman would only gain seven chances from 8-meter arc, ripping just one of those opportunities into the back of the net.
The SpringFling tournament continues Thursday for Whitman when it takes on No. 12 Messiah (Pa.) College in the Blues' first match-up against a nationally-ranked team.
