CLAREMONT, Calif. Thursday's neutral-site, non-conference national showdown at The Claremont Club started positively for No. 27 Whitman, but the 18th-ranked Tigers from Trinity (Texas) University would roll out eight consecutive wins to score an 8-1 victory in women's tennis action.
The Blues (5-6) got off on the right foot, winning the first point of the day with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles by
Hanna Greenberg and
Andrea Gu.
Trinity (4-9) would win the other two doubles matches, though, then swept the six singles matches to finish off its win.
Twice during singles play the Blues would push for points. Both Greenberg and
Anastasiya Redkina would battle into third-set super-tiebreaks before succumbing to their Trinity opponents.
Greenberg at 4-singles captured the opening set, 6-3, against Francesca Canjar, but Canjar won the second, 6-4, to draw even. The tiebreak fell Canjar's way with a 1-0 (10-4) triumph.
At No. 5, Redkina, too, would win her first set by a 6-3 count, only to have Trinity's Paulina Garcia battle back with a 6-1 win, forcing a tiebreak set which Garcia won 1-0 (10-7).
Whitman moves on after the loss to play host Cal Lutheran Friday in a 2 p.m. match.
