THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. Whitman's 27th-ranked women's tennis evened its season record with a resounding 8-1 non-conference victory over host Cal Lutheran University Friday afternoon on the Regals' home courts at the Poulson Tennis Center.
The win lifts the Blues' season mark to 6-6, while Cal Lutheran slips to 2-5.
In aiming to beat forecasted showers, the six singles matches stepped onto the courts first, and Whitman made the most of that reversal of protocol by sweeping all six positions to clinch the match before any rain drops threatened.
In a 'reversal' coincidence, Whitman scored its singles points in reverse order with
Jenna Gilbert notching the first point at No. 6 behind a shutout of Nicole Klaparda.
Anastasiya Redkina, at 5-singles, swept past CLU's Jade Moore (6-1, 6-1) next, followed by
Hanna Greenberg's 2 and 1 win at No. 4 over Nicole Neumann.
Lori Sheng added the fourth point for the Blues with a 2 and 3 win at No. 3, allowing
Andrea Gu to post the clinching point with her 1 and 3 victory at No. 1.
That left
Mary Hill on the courts at 1-singles, where she was battling the Regals' top player, Christie Kurdys. Hill needed a few extra ground strokes in the first set but eventually pulled out a 7-6 (10-8) tiebreak win, then completed Whitman's singles sweep by taking the second set, 6-4.
Cal Lutheran picked up the next point, at No. 3 doubles, but Redkina and Sheng teamed up at 2-doubles for an 8-4 win, followed by Greenberg and Gu's 8-1 win in the No. 1 slot.
The rain held off, but the hosts weren't able to hold off a strong Whitman showing.
The Blues play one more match during their spring break trip into Southern California, taking on No. 8 Tufts (Mass.) University in a non-conference match Sunday at 12 p.m. on the Cal State-Northridge courts in Northridge, California.
