NORTHRIDGE, Calif. A sweep in the doubles matches quieted No. 27 Whitman's upset bid, and No. 8 Tufts (Mass.) University finally ended the threat in singles action to take a 7-2 non-conference women's tennis victory over the Blues at the Cal State-Northridge Matador Tennis Complex.
Whitman (6-7) slipped behind with three Tufts (2-1) triumphs in doubles to begin the afternoon.
Mary Hill and
Lori Sheng forced the Jumbos' Patricia Obeid and Kat Wiley into an extra game, but eventually fell to the Tufts pairing, 9-7.
Tufts clinched its victory with the first four points during singles play before
Hanna Greenberg and
Andrea Gu would score wins for Whitman.
At No. 4 it was Greenberg who recorded a straight-set, 6-1 and 6-4, win over Tomo Iwasaki for the initial Blues point.
Gu battled Lauren Louks in a lengthy affair at 2-singles.
Louks rolled to a 6-3 opening-set win before Gu responded with a 7-6 (2) win in the second that squared the match.
In the third-set super-tiebreak it was Gu who closed out the match, winning the set 1-0 with a 10-5 points victory.
The match concludes Whitman's spring break trip to Southern California. The Blues return to the Northwest where they will next head to Seattle University for a non-conference match on March 31.
