PASADENA, Calif. Whitman College's venture into Southern California over spring break continued Thursday, but with an outcome that favored No. 32 Swarthmore (Pa.) College as the Garnet rallied for a 5-4 decision over the No. 11 Blues in a non-conference men's tennis match at the Hunt Valley Athletic Club.
Whitman (8-4) led, 2-1, after the doubles matches but Swarthmore (3-6) pushed back in the singles bouts by winning four of the six matches for the come-from-behind victory.
The afternoon began well for the Blues with their pairings at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles winning battles against Garnet duos.
Robert Carter and
Zach Hewlin, an ITA All-American pair, finished off Swarthmore's Mark Fallati and Josh Powell at 1-doubles with an 8-6 victory. In the No. 2 slot,
Trevor Fennessy and
Alex Hwang outlasted the Garnet's John Lathrop and Thibault Vernier, 9-7, to provide Whitman with the advantage heading into the singles matches.
Ben Kirsh won a three-setter (6-1, 6-7, 6-1) at No. 2 for Whitman, and Carter won in straight sets (6-0, 7-5) at 4-singles, but Swarthmore captured the other four singles battles in straight sets during its rally.
The Blues will look to leap back into the win column Friday morning in a 9 a.m. match against second-ranked Bowdoin (Maine) College.
