Personal Best for Selznick in Fly race

INDIANAPOLIS  Whitman College sophomore Mara Selznick set a personal best in the 100-yard butterfly during her preliminary heat Thursday morning at the NCAA 2018 Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, posting a time of 57.87 seconds to place 35th at the meet hosted in the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Aquatic Center pool.

Thursday's prelims marked the second day of the four-day national meet. Selznick swam the 200 individual medley during Wednesday's opening session.

The time she posted Thursday morning shatters her previous best (1 minute, 0.17 seconds), set in a November dual meet against College of Idaho, and is the second fastest 100 butterfly time in Whitman's women's swimming history (57.44).

In Indy, Selznick went out in her first 50 more than two seconds faster -- 26.21 on Thursday, compared to 28.66 in November -- and brought the race home in roughly the same split (31.66 vs. 31.51 in Nov.) for her second 50.

Friday's event schedule brings Selznick's final swim at nationals, the 100 backstroke. She is seeded 20th -- the top 16 prelims times return for the evening's consolation and championship heat finals -- with a time of 56.31, her winning time at the 2018 Northwest Conference Championship Meet.

Selznick set the Whitman record in the 100 back during her first year on campus when she won the event at the 2017 NWC championships with a time of 55.94.
