Brendan Henry tossed a complete-game for Whitman in its 2-1 Northwest Conference victory over visiting Whitworth University Tuesday afternoon at Borleske Stadium, allowing the Blues to sweep the season series from Pirates.
The game Tuesday -- in which Whitworth played as the 'home' team -- was a make up for one of a snowed-out three-game set originally scheduled for late February in Spokane, Washington. Whitman (13-15, 8-7 NWC) took the first two re-scheduled games of that set in a doubleheader sweep at Whitworth (12-14, 7-8) on March 20.
Henry was economical and in command across his nine-inning outing, finishing the game out with just 102 pitches while allowing only eight base runners against five 1-2-3 innings.
Whitworth's lone run came in the bottom of the eighth after a one-out single, a ground out to advance the runner, a steal of third base, and an RBI single that looped over the second-base bag.
Other than in that frame, Henry let the Pirates push a runner as far as second base only three times prior.
Whitworth starter Austin Rice wasn't having a bad day himself. Whitman put a runner in scoring position at second in the first, second and fourth innings but Rice stifled anything else from the Blues in each frame.
Not until the top of the sixth was Whitman able to piece together consecutive at-bats that produced base runners.
Tyler Lewis led off the inning with a double down the right-field line and was soon joined on the bases when
Joseph Zimmer worked Rice for a base on balls.
Lucas Thrun stepped into the box next and lashed a two-RBI double into the same right-field corner as Lewis' rap, allowing Lewis and Zimmer to race all the way home for a 2-0 lead.
Whitman threatened again in the seventh but left runners at second and third that could have added to the two-run cushion. No matter, though, as Henry was still in control.
Henry, despite the run allowed in the eighth, stepped back onto the bump in the ninth and registered just his third strike-out of the game for the first out. A dribbler halfway down the first-base line was an easy pick-up and toss to first for Henry for the second out, and the game clincher came on a foul pop to first-baseman
Lucas Thrun.
Thrun and
Brett Williams each had two hits in the Whitman win, with Thrun collected the Blues' two RBIs.
Rice took the loss for Whitworth after pitching six innings and surrendering two runs on five hits and two walks.
With other league action from Tuesday also in the books, the Blues moved into a second-place tie with Linfield in the conference standings.
Whitman heads out on the road for the Easter weekend games, playing two at University of Puget Sound on Friday afternoon, and the series closer at UPS on Saturday.
